Rinse the sticky rice and mung beans, then drain them well. Soak the rice and beans briefly to help them soften.

If cooking sticky rice with mung beans using a rice cooker, the soaking time should be shorter than for steaming. Soaking too long can make the rice mushy if not adjusted properly.

Ideally, soak the rice and beans for about 30 minutes. You can also steam the mung beans for 10 minutes to make them soft and fluffy.

Wash the pandan leaves if you have them. Pandan leaves will add fragrance to the sticky rice.

If you don't have time to soak the rice and beans, rinse them well and cook them directly in the rice cooker. However, the sticky rice may turn out a bit hard, so you’ll need to press the cook button 3-4 times to get the rice tender and the beans soft.

Cook Sticky Rice with Mung Beans

If you have pandan leaves, line the bottom of the rice cooker with them to prevent sticking and add aroma.

Next, add the mung beans and sticky rice to the cooker. Mix in nearly 1 teaspoon of salt and 3 tablespoons of cooking oil (or chicken fat). Add just enough water to cover the surface of the rice.

When cooking sticky rice with mung beans in a rice cooker, the water level is important—only add enough to just cover the rice. Too much water will make the rice mushy. If the rice turns out a bit dry, you can add more water later, but fixing mushy rice is difficult.

Press the cook button to start. Once the water starts boiling, you can open the lid to check and stir the rice, adjusting the water if necessary.

When the cooker switches to the warm mode, leave it for another 5-10 minutes to let the rice cook thoroughly.

Then, add 50ml of coconut milk, stir well, and press the cook button again for the second round to ensure the rice is soft and fragrant.

When the cooker switches back to warm mode, let it sit for 5-10 more minutes. Your sticky rice with mung beans is now ready to be served. Enjoy it hot!
